The Elbphilharmonie (nicknamed 'Elphi') is Hamburg's landmark concert hall at the tip of the HafenCity peninsula, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2017, with a wave-like glass structure rising atop the old Kaispeicher A brick warehouse. It has become a symbol of the city thanks to its world-class Grand Hall and the Plaza, a 37-metre-high public viewing platform offering panoramic views. In 2026 it still draws up to 17,000 visitors a day, and it is well worth a visit for the architecture and viewpoint even without attending a concert. Note that the long-free Plaza admission changes to a paid €5 ticket from 5 October 2026.

RulesAs of July 2026 the Plaza is free with an on-site ticket (limited quantity) or €3 booking fee for online pre-booking. From 5 October 2026 admission becomes €5 for everyone, so check current prices and policy on the official website. Free on-site tickets sell out fast in peak season — pre-book a timed slot to be safe.
MannersConcert-hall etiquette applies: smart-casual dress is advised, and latecomers are not admitted until an interval. Arrive about 30 minutes early, silence phones, and refrain from photography during the performance.
SeasonThe Plaza and façade are exposed on the water, so it is windy and feels colder than the city. Bring a windproof jacket or extra layer in spring, autumn and winter; even summer evenings can be chilly with river wind.
SafetyWatch for pickpockets in crowded tourist and transit areas such as Landungsbrücken, the viewing platform and U-Bahn stations. Wear your bag in front and keep passport, wallet and phone in an inner zipped pocket.
RulesAccess via U3 Baumwall (Elbphilharmonie), about a 450 m walk, or U4 Überseequartier, or ferry line 72 from Landungsbrücken. Hamburg public transport (HVV) requires a ticket in advance; a same-day concert ticket also serves as a return fare in HVV zones A–F. Bridge restoration on the Niederbaumbrücke (through February 2028) forces vehicle detours, so public transport is recommended.
CautionBuy tickets only from the official website (elbphilharmonie.de), the official box office or the ticket pavilion (Am Kaiserkai 62). Avoid marked-up unofficial resale sites and on-street touts.
