Overview
The Galleria dell'Accademia is Florence's home of Michelangelo's original 'David' (about 5.17m tall), carved between 1501 and 1504. The statue stands in the domed Tribune hall under a purpose-built skylight, and the museum holds the world's largest collection of Michelangelo sculptures, including the unfinished 'Prisoners (Slaves)'. It is a compact museum — the highlights take roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.

RulesAdvance reservation is effectively essential in high season (April–October). Without it, summer ticket lines can run 60–120 minutes; book on the official site at least a month ahead in peak season. Confirm current prices and hours before you go.
CautionBeware unofficial resellers pushing 'skip-the-line' tickets. Travelers have received confirmation emails only to be turned away on-site or found their tickets void. Buy only through the official website or authorized vendors.
CautionNear the museum, scammers lay prints on the pavement to look like fresh paintings; step on one and they demand payment and follow you. Ignore bracelet-tying, petition-signing, and similar street approaches and keep walking.
SafetyPickpocketing is common in crowded spots like the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and on public transit. Wear bags in front with zippers closed, and stay especially alert with belongings while queuing and in the Tribune crowd.
RulesBag rule: large bags, backpacks and helmets over roughly 40×30×18cm are not allowed, and the gallery officially states it provides no cloakroom. It is safest to leave big luggage at a city storage service beforehand.
MannersOnly personal, non-flash photography is allowed; flash, tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. The gallery is closed Mondays plus Jan 1 and Dec 25 — verify your visit date.
Practical info
Open Tue–Sun 08:15–18:50 (last entry 18:20); closed Mondays. Online booking carries a reservation fee (verify current prices/hours). From March 15, 2026 a combined ticket with the Bargello and other sites is also offered — check if useful.
