Fansipan Peak (Đỉnh Fansipan), in the Hoang Lien Son range near Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, rises to about 3,147 m (the older survey figure is 3,143 m) and is the highest mountain in Vietnam and all of Indochina — the so-called "Roof of Indochina." Most visitors today reach it from Sa Pa town via one of the world's longest and steepest cable cars (about 6.3 km in 15 minutes). The summit area hosts a Buddhist spiritual complex, including a giant copper Amitabha Buddha statue and Kim Son Bao Thang pagoda, with the final stretch to the summit marker done via roughly 600 stone steps or a short funicular.

Good to know
SeasonThe summit is usually 7–12°C colder than Sa Pa town, often windy, and the weather changes fast (clear morning, cloud by noon, mist or rain by afternoon). A windproof jacket, warm layers and gloves are essentially required year-round.
SafetyAt roughly 3,100 m the air is thinner, so climbing the steps can cause shortness of breath, a racing heart and fatigue. Pace yourself; travelers with heart or respiratory conditions and the elderly should not overexert. Cable-car service may be suspended in severe weather for safety.
MannersThe summit is an active Buddhist worship site. Avoid shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops; cover shoulders and knees (bring a scarf or sarong). Do not touch statues or sacred objects unless invited to do so.
CautionIn Sa Pa, be wary of friendly H'mong women or children offering a "free" guided walk to their village — they often press you to buy goods or demand tips once you arrive. Politely decline from the start if you're not interested.
CautionOvercharging on taxis, tours and lodging is common. Fix the fare before boarding a taxi or use the Grab app (a short in-town ride should be under 100,000 VND), and book tours and stays through reputable operators. Avoid giving sweets or money to children, as it encourages begging.

Practical info
Allow about 2–3 hours round-trip from Sa Pa town. The cable car generally runs 7:30–17:30 (with extended Fri–Sat hours on some days); March–May and September–November offer the clearest, most comfortable weather.
