Location

Overview

El Ateneo Grand Splendid is a bookstore at Av. Santa Fe 1860 in Buenos Aires, set inside a lavishly restored 1919 theatre (the former Teatro Gran Splendid) where tango legends such as Carlos Gardel once performed. When it was converted into a bookshop in 2000, the ornate balconies, theatre boxes, red stage curtain and Nazareno Orlandi's painted dome were all preserved, and in 2019 National Geographic named it the world's most beautiful bookstore. Since January 2026 a new ticketed immersive tour, the 'Grand Splendid Experience', runs on the third floor, telling the building's story through projections and interactive technology. Entry to the bookstore itself is free, so it is an easy, atmospheric stop for browsing and photos.
