The Boboli Gardens (Giardino di Boboli) are a monumental Italian-style garden on the hillside behind the Pitti Palace, south of the Arno in Florence. Begun in 1549 for the Medici duchess Eleonora of Toledo and designed by Tribolo, its roughly 45,000 sq m became a model for European court gardens. It is part of two UNESCO World Heritage listings: the Historic Centre of Florence and the Medici Villas and Gardens of Tuscany.
The Amphitheater: the main axis behind the palace, shaped like half of a classical Roman hippodrome, with an ancient Egyptian obelisk (brought from the Villa Medici in Rome) at its center.
Fountain of Neptune: on the slope above the amphitheater, a basin with a bronze Neptune by Stoldo Lorenzi (1565-1568), locally nicknamed the 'Fountain of the Fork.'
Buontalenti Grotto: an elaborate artificial cave by Bernardo Buontalenti, blending sculpture, fresco and dripstone in a Mannerist masterpiece.
The Isolotto and Fountain of the Ocean: an island garden in a circular pond with Giambologna's grand Ocean fountain.
Hilltop views and the Porcelain Museum: sweeping panoramas of Florence from the upper terraces, plus a porcelain collection.

RulesIn high season (especially spring and summer) ticket lines can be long, so advance online booking via the official Uffizi Galleries site (uffizi.it) is strongly advised. Last admission is one hour before closing. Always re-check current prices and hours on the official site before your visit.
RulesThe gardens close on the first and last Monday of every month and on December 25, and open Tuesday-Sunday from 08:15 (note: not a standard Monday closure). Closing time varies by season, roughly 16:30 to 19:10, so confirm for your travel date.
SeasonThe grounds are large with hills, stairs and gravel paths and limited shade. Midday summer heat can be intense, so visit early morning or late afternoon and bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes. Drinking fountains are near the Garden of Madama, the Knight's Garden and the Grotto of Adam and Eve.
SafetyMany slopes, steps and pebbled paths make it difficult for strollers and wheelchairs and easy to twist an ankle. Avoid heeled shoes and take care on slippery inclines when traveling with children or older visitors.
SafetyCentral Florence (around Pitti Palace, on public transport and in crowded tourist zones) has frequent pickpocketing. Wear your bag in front, use an anti-theft or zipped bag and carry minimal valuables.
CautionBeware informal sellers near the ticket office or entrance offering to 'skip the line,' and overpriced resale tickets. Buy only from the official Uffizi website or the official ticket office.
