Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, founding lord of the Sendai domain, built in 1637 in the lavish Momoyama style. Designated a National Treasure in 1931, it was destroyed in a WWII air raid, and the current structure was reconstructed in 1979. The grounds also hold the mausoleums of the 2nd and 3rd lords (Kansenden and Zennoden) and a history museum, letting you trace the Date family's legacy.

SafetyThe approach to the ticket desk and main hall is very steep, with roughly 62-70 stone steps. Wear comfortable shoes and take care in rain or snow, when the steps become slippery.
RulesThe history museum is scheduled to close for renovation from Dec 1, 2025 to around Apr 28, 2026, and admission fees may change during this period. Check the official website for current fees and closures before visiting.
MannersThis is the actual burial site of Date Masamune, not merely a sightseeing spot. Please keep your voice down and behave respectfully as at a place of worship.
SeasonFrom Dec 1 to Jan 31 hours shorten to a 16:20 close (last admission 16:00), and the site is closed on Dec 31. In winter, allow extra time as the steps can be icy.
SafetyWheelchair users can reach only the start of the approach path; beyond that the stone steps make access difficult. A free loaner wheelchair is available but requires several helpers to assist.
Practical info
From Sendai Station, take the Loople bus to 'Zuihoden-mae' then walk about 7 min; or Tozai subway to 'Omachi-Nishi-Koen' and walk 15-20 min; taxi about 10 min. Adult admission around 570 yen (confirm latest). Allow about 60 minutes. Free parking available.
