Zenko-ji is a non-sectarian Buddhist temple in Nagano City with roughly 1,400 years of history, founded in the 7th century and famous for welcoming everyone regardless of denomination. It enshrines the Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai, considered Japan's oldest Buddhist image, a hidden statue (hibutsu) that has never been shown to the public. One of Japan's most important pilgrimage sites, it draws about 7 million visitors a year; its main hall, rebuilt in 1707, was designated a National Treasure in 1953.

Oasaji Morning Service: A daily ritual held in the main hall at sunrise, with the O-juzu Chodai blessing where the head priest gently touches worshippers' heads with prayer beads.

SafetyThe O-Kaidan Meguri means walking about 45 meters in total darkness with your right hand on the wall. Take care if you are claustrophobic, and a backpack is safer than a shoulder bag so your hands stay free.
MannersThe main hall is a living place of worship. Keep quiet inside the inner sanctuary and during morning service, and always follow on-site signs and staff regarding whether photography is permitted.
SeasonSnow and ice are common from December to March. Wear waterproof shoes with good traction, and dress warmly if you attend the early-morning service.
RulesEntry to the inner sanctuary, the O-Kaidan Meguri, and the history museum requires the inner-sanctuary ticket, and climbing the Sanmon gate has a separate fee. Fees and opening hours vary by season, so check the latest information before visiting.
SafetyOn busy days the queue for the O-Kaidan Meguri gets long. It is shortest before 8 a.m., so arriving early helps you avoid the crowds.
Practical info
About a 10-minute bus ride from JR Nagano Station, or take the Nagaden line to Zenkojishita Station and walk 5-10 minutes. Shops along the Nakamise approach generally start closing after 3 p.m., so visit earlier. Fees and hours should be checked for the latest information.
