The Zao Onsen Snow Monsters (juhyo) are one of Japan's most striking winter sights: trees on the Zao mountains in Yamagata Prefecture buried by wind-driven snow and rime ice until they resemble enormous frozen creatures. The Zao Ropeway carries visitors up to Jizo Sancho Station at the summit for close-up views of vast fields of snow monsters, which are illuminated on select evenings for a dreamlike glow. At the mountain's base lies a roughly 1,900-year-old hot spring village fed by strongly acidic sulfur water, so skiing, monster-viewing and bathing can all be combined.

SafetySummit weather changes fast. The ropeway is frequently suspended in strong winds or whiteouts and monsters may be invisible in poor visibility, so plan a flexible schedule and check same-day operating status before going up.
SafetyThe summit is bitterly cold with sharply lower wind-chill. Wear full winter gear: insulated coat, gloves, hat and non-slip footwear.
RulesIn peak winter the Yamagata Station–Zao Onsen bus gets crowded or sold out, so buy your ticket before boarding. The Night Cruiser tour must be reserved in advance.
MannersAt Zao Onsen bathhouses, wash your body before entering the tub. The strongly acidic sulfur water is potent, so keep baths short if your skin is sensitive and rinse with fresh water afterward.
Practical info
From Yamagata Station take the bus about 40–45 minutes to Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, then walk to the ropeway Sanroku Station. Ropeway round trip is roughly ¥4,400 adult / ¥2,200 child; the Night Cruiser tour is about ¥7,500 adult (reservation required).
