The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a string of natural sea caves and arches carved by the Ionian Sea into the island's white limestone cliffs, running along the northern coast between the port of Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari. Their name comes from the vivid blue reflections of the water inside the caverns, an effect often compared to the Blue Grotto of Capri; first documented in 1897, they are now one of Zakynthos' signature natural landmarks. SeasonIn strong wind or rough seas, boats cannot enter the caves. Aim for 9–11 a.m. when the light and water are best, and check local weather and sailing conditions on the day of your visit.
SeasonBoats run mainly in the warm season (roughly May–October) and are scarce in winter. July and August are especially busy, so take an early-morning trip to beat the crowds.
RulesOnly small boats (up to about 50 seats) can enter the caves; large cruise boats can only view from the entrance. Before booking, confirm your tour is a small boat that actually goes inside the caves.
SafetyThe Blue Caves are reachable only by boat, and swimming into the main caves is forbidden and dangerous because of boat traffic. The stairs down to the sea at Cape Skinari are slippery, so bring water shoes and sun protection.
MannersDo not touch or damage the limestone or drop litter in the sea, and take turns with other boats and swimmers inside the narrow caves so everyone can enjoy them.

SafetyThe roads down to Agios Nikolaos port and Cape Skinari are narrow and winding, so drive with time to spare if you rent a car, and bring motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness.
Practical info
Trips leave from Agios Nikolaos port in the north (about 30 km from Zakynthos Town and the airport) or from the small jetty below the Skinari lighthouse. In high season small boats run roughly every 15 minutes from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a Blue-Caves-only circuit lasting around 40 minutes to an hour. There are no fixed opening hours or single combined ticket; you pay the operator at the harbour, and prices, timetables and whether Navagio is included vary by season and operator, so check the latest details before you go.
