Location

Overview

Tunnel View is a scenic overlook in Yosemite National Park, California, reached just past the eastern portal of the Wawona Tunnel — completed in 1933 and still California's longest highway tunnel — on Wawona Road (Highway 41). It frames one of the most photographed vistas in the American West, combining El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome in a single sweeping view of Yosemite Valley. Recognized by the NPS as historically significant 'rustic design' architecture eligible for the National Register, the overlook underwent a roughly $3 million rehabilitation in 2008 that added accessible viewing platforms, safety railings, and interpretive exhibits. As of 2026 it remains one of the park's most-visited pull-outs, drawing an estimated 5,000-7,000 visitors daily at peak season, most stopping briefly by car to photograph the view before continuing into the valley.

Practical info

Yosemite is roughly a 2-3 hour drive by rental car from Fresno (FAT), with longer drives from Sacramento or San Francisco airports; entering via the South Entrance on Highway 41 (Wawona Road) leads directly through the Wawona Tunnel to Tunnel View. Free valley shuttles run in peak season but don't serve Tunnel View itself, so most visitors arrive by car; check the NPS website for the latest entrance fees and any reservation requirements.
