Overview
The Yellow River Scenic Area (recently renamed the Zhengzhou Yellow River Cultural Park) is a national AAAA-rated scenic area and geopark on the banks of the Yellow River, about 20-30 km northwest of Zhengzhou in Henan Province. It marks the point where the river becomes a 'suspended river' running above the surrounding plain and where its middle and lower reaches meet, giving it deep significance as a cradle of Chinese civilization. Peaks, temples, and monumental sculptures are spread along the river across several scenic zones.

SeasonThe river runs fullest and most dramatic roughly July-October. In the winter and spring dry season the channel narrows and sandbars emerge, so the scenery can look flatter and less impressive.
SafetyThe Yellow River is heavy with silt, opaque, and has unpredictable currents, depth, and quicksand-like sandbars. Do not climb down to the water to wade or swim; view the river only from behind railings and marked safety lines.
RulesCable car, hovercraft, and slideway rides are charged separately from admission. The geological museum is often closed on Mondays, so confirm fees, operating status, and closures before you go.
CautionNear the main gate and parking areas you may meet touts pushing cheap tours, riverside boat trips, or unofficial photo services. Pay for rides and boats at official ticket counters where possible, and treat private 'special deals' with caution.
MannersThe Yan-Huang and Yu the Great statues honor revered ancestors and sages of the Chinese nation. Many locals come to pay respects, so avoid rowdy behavior or disrespectful posed photos in front of the monuments.
SafetyThe grounds are large with many hills and stairs, and summers bring strong sun and loess dust. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes, and consider a mask on days with heavy dust or sandstorms.
Practical info
From downtown Zhengzhou it is about 1 hour by city bus (e.g. Route 16) or roughly 40 minutes by taxi (around 30-40 RMB). Admission is roughly 45-60 RMB, with free entry often given to children under 1.4 m and seniors 60+, but prices and hours (roughly 8:00 AM-5:30 PM, extended in summer) vary by season and year, so check the latest before visiting. Shuttle buses link the scenic zones inside.
