The Wieliczka Salt Mine, just outside Kraków, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that produced rock salt for more than 700 years and was named to the very first World Heritage list in 1978. Deep underground it hides chapels carved entirely from salt, chandeliers cut from salt crystals, brine lakes and a labyrinth of chambers, crowned by St. Kinga's Chapel — often called an underground salt cathedral. In 2026 it remains fully open year-round and is one of the most popular day trips from Kraków, so booking online ahead is essentially required in summer and on weekends. Entry is only by timed guided tour, so plan your visit around the tour schedule.

SafetyThe Tourist Route begins with a long wooden staircase and involves more than 800 steps up and down. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes; skip it if you have serious knee problems or claustrophobia. Large suitcases and big backpacks are not allowed inside.
SeasonIt stays a cool 14–18°C underground all year, so bring a light jacket even in summer. July–August, weekends and holidays are very busy — early time slots are the most comfortable.
RulesYou cannot wander freely; entry is only on a fixed-time guided tour. English tours run at set times, so confirm the language and slot when booking. A separate photo permit (extra fee) may be required to take pictures.
MannersSt. Kinga's Chapel is a working place of worship where Mass and even weddings are held. Keep your voice down and be considerate of pilgrims and other visitors when taking photos.
CautionTickets are sold only through the official site (bilety.kopalnia.pl) and at on-site ticket offices and machines. The mine works with no third parties, so avoid marked-up 'fast-track' touts and unofficial resale websites.
SafetyReach it by train or bus (about 30 minutes) from central Kraków. Watch for pickpockets on transport and around the crowded ticket area, and keep your bag in front of you.
Practical info
From Kraków Główny station, a Wieliczka train (terminus Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia) or bus takes about 30 minutes, leaving a short walk to the mine. The Tourist Route generally opens from around 8:00 into the evening (hours differ between high and low season) and is closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 November and 24–25 December. Prices, hours and tour languages change by season, so always check the latest details on the official site before you go.
