A Khmer Hindu temple complex in Champasak in southern Laos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built before Angkor Wat. Its terraced ascent up a hillside and sacred spring are striking.

SeasonPilgrims flock during the Wat Phou festival in Feb–Mar; the heat is intense, so explore in the morning.
SafetyThe stone steps to the top are steep and uneven — bring grippy shoes and water.
·Usually visited as a day trip from Pakse; there is little shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen.
