The Wachau is a roughly 36 km stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in December 2000. Terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, Baroque abbeys and medieval castle ruins line the river, and it is renowned as the source of Austria's finest dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines. As of summer 2026 the April-to-October river cruises, the Danube Cycle Path and the World Heritage Trail are all running normally, and Krems hosts its apricot festival (Marillenfest) in July. Easy to reach as a day trip from Vienna, it is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace by combining boat, bike and walking.

SeasonCruises and abbeys mostly operate in the April-October high season; in winter many close or offer guided tours only. Apricot blossom is early April and the harvest and Marillenfest fall around July, so time your visit to what you want to see.
RulesThere are no bridges across the Danube within the Wachau, so you cross between banks by ferry. Dürnstein's old town is closed to cars and parking, so use the paid car parks outside the centre (a 7-10 minute walk).
SafetyCastle ruins and vineyard steps and paths can be steep and slippery, so wear sturdy shoes. The exposed summer terraces offer little shade, so bring sun protection and water, and watch for pickpockets on crowded peak-season trains and boats.
CautionBuy cruise and abbey tickets from official channels (DDSG Blue Danube, Stift Melk) rather than third-party resellers charging a markup, and avoid taxis that will not run the meter.
MannersIn restaurants it is customary to round up the bill or leave about 5-10%. Keep quiet inside churches and abbeys and respect photo and dress rules, and reserve ahead for popular Heurigen and cruises in peak season.
Practical info
Direct REX trains from Vienna's Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof reach Krems in about 1 hour 10 minutes, while Melk is served by trains on the Western line. From April to October DDSG cruises link Melk and Krems, and you can also explore via the Danube Cycle Path and the World Heritage Trail (Welterbesteig); Melk Abbey is open roughly 09:00-17:30 in season.
