Vondelpark is Amsterdam's most famous city park, a roughly 47-hectare English-style landscape garden laid out in 1865 just west of the museum district. Named after the 17th-century poet Joost van den Vondel, it weaves together ponds, meadows and winding paths and draws around ten million visitors a year. In 2026 it remains open 24 hours a day and free to enter, and from May to mid-September its Open Air Theatre stages more than 100 free performances, a summer highlight in its own right. Framed as a green pause between the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, it is the ideal spot to slow down and picnic like a local.

Good to know
SafetyAvoid walking alone in the park late at night and stick to well-lit main paths. Although open 24/7, many areas have little lighting after dark.
CautionPickpockets work the busy entrances, cafés and the nearby Leidseplein square. Wear bags to the front and never leave a phone or wallet on a bench or table.
RulesSince 11 May 2025, fatbikes with tyres wider than 7 cm are banned from the park, with a fine of 115 euros for offenders. Check the type of bike before renting.
MannersCycle only on the paved through-paths and never across the lawns; when on foot, don't stop or stand in the bike lanes, which keeps things smooth with locals.
RulesDogs may run off-leash in most of the park but are barred from playgrounds, the natural pastures and the barbecue meadow. Barbecuing is allowed only in the designated lawn.
SeasonDutch summers are changeable, with frequent showers and wind. Pack a waterproof layer and a mat, and on sunny weekends claim your Open Air Theatre spot early.

The park itself is open 24 hours and free; it is about a 5–10 minute walk from Leidseplein near the Rijksmuseum, and is reachable by tram and bus.
