Overview

Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) is a 15th-16th-century Renaissance district stretching along the west bank of the Saône, and one of the best-preserved Renaissance quarters in Europe. It comprises three areas — Saint-Georges to the south, Saint-Jean in the centre and Saint-Paul to the north — and has been part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Site of Lyon since 1998. Its trademarks are the traboules (hidden passageways threading through buildings) and Renaissance courtyards; the astronomical clock in Saint-Jean Cathedral, silent since it was vandalised in 2013, was restored in September 2024 and now chimes several times a day again. Most of the district can be explored on foot for free, but booking a guided traboule tour rewards visitors with far more of the hidden detail.

Practical info

The gateway is Metro line D 'Vieux Lyon - Cathédrale Saint-Jean'; from the same station the F2 funicular reaches the Fourvière basilica in 2-3 minutes. Traboules and courtyards are mostly free and open roughly 07:00-19:00 but are private property requiring quiet; confirm cathedral and museum opening hours and guided-tour prices (about €13-21) on the official Lyon Tourist Office site shortly before visiting.
