Overview

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in South Kensington is one of the world's greatest museums of art, design and performance, holding around 2.3 million objects spanning 5,000 years of human creativity. It is renowned for a vast, cross-genre collection—sculpture, fashion, ceramics, metalwork, photography—and for its own ornate Victorian architecture. In 2026 the visit is richer than ever: the Gilbert Collection galleries of silver, enamel and gold reopened in March, expanded from four rooms to seven, and major ticketed shows such as 'Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art' draw crowds. Because the permanent collection is free, it is an easy half-day highlight of any London trip.
