🇱🇦 Vang Vieng

ວັງວຽງ · 방비엥

Location

Overview

Vang Vieng sits about 150 km north of Laos' capital Vientiane, cradled between dramatic limestone karsts and the slow Nam Song River. Once notorious for its wild riverside party scene and fatal accidents, the town was overhauled by authorities and reborn as an outdoor and eco-tourism hub built around ballooning, tubing, blue lagoons and cave trips. The Laos-China high-speed railway now stops here, making it an easy stop between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Highlights

Good to know

Practical info

From Vientiane it is about 1 hour by the Laos-China railway (Vang Vieng station is ~4 km from the center) or ~4 hours by bus/minibus. Train tickets go on sale 3 days ahead via the LCR app and often sell out fast. Peak season is the cool dry months (Nov-Feb, 20-25°C), pleasant but crowded and pricier; Aug-Sep brings heavy rain and strong currents that limit activities.
