The USS Midway Museum is a floating museum aboard the actual aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41), permanently berthed along San Diego's Embarcadero waterfront. Commissioned days after the end of World War II, Midway served 47 years until her 1992 decommissioning — the longest-serving U.S. Navy carrier of the 20th century — seeing combat in Vietnam and serving as flagship during 1991's Operation Desert Storm before opening as a museum in 2004 and becoming one of America's most popular warship museums. As of 2026 the recently restored Island (bridge) superstructure and a new naval-intelligence exhibit recreating the ship's Desert Storm mission-planning center have expanded what visitors can explore. With rows of fighter jets set against the downtown skyline, it makes an easy half-day visit even for those who aren't military-history buffs.

SeasonThe flight deck offers almost no shade and is fully exposed to sun and sea wind. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water; in May–June, morning marine fog ('May Gray/June Gloom') can blur the views, so afternoons are often clearer.
RulesThe ship has many steep stairs and ladders, so flat, comfortable closed-toe shoes are essential. In peak season and on weekends, booking a timed-entry ticket in advance is wise.
MannersThis is a war memorial staffed largely by veteran volunteers; keep a respectful, quiet demeanor in the exhibit areas. If you take a paid guided tour, keep U.S. tipping customs in mind.
CautionBuy tickets from the official site (midway.org) to avoid marked-up third-party resellers and fake 'discount' pages. Note the audio tour is not offered in Korean (English, Japanese and Mandarin are available).
SafetyThe Embarcadero is generally safe, but as in any U.S. downtown you may encounter people experiencing homelessness. Keep your belongings secure and stay aware on the waterfront after dark.

The museum sits on the Embarcadero at 910 North Harbor Drive, right beside Seaport Village and about 3 km from San Diego International Airport. It is a 10–15 minute walk from the MTS Trolley's Santa Fe Depot and Little Italy stations. It opens daily at 10 a.m. (last admission 4 p.m., ship closes 5 p.m.) and closes only on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but confirm current prices and hours on the official website.
