Overview
Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is Portugal's oldest university, set atop the hill on the site of a former royal palace (Paço das Escolas) and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. Its centerpiece, the Baroque Joanina Library (built 1717–1728 under King João V), dazzles with gilded woodwork and painted ceilings — and is famous for the 300-year-old conservation method by which a colony of bats still hunts book-eating insects each night.

RulesThe Joanina Library is entered only in timed 20-minute slots (about 50–60 people each); your ticket carries a fixed entry time you must keep, and the visit inside is strictly limited to roughly 10–15 minutes.
RulesPhotography is prohibited inside the library to protect the ancient books, gilding and ceiling paintings. Follow on-site rules on cameras and what you may bring in.
SeasonIn peak summer and during the Queima das Fitas festival (2026 dates: May 22–30), same-day tickets sell out fast, so online pre-booking is effectively essential. Verify prices, hours and open areas on the official site before you go.
SafetyThe university sits atop steep hills and cobbled (calçada) lanes, reached via the 125-step Escadas Monumentais. Wear sturdy non-slip shoes; a gentler but longer route exists for those with limited mobility.
