Umi Jigoku ("Sea Hell") is the largest and most iconic of Beppu's seven "Hells," a cobalt-blue hot spring pond said to have formed in a volcanic eruption around 1,300 years ago. The vivid ocean-blue color comes from dissolved iron sulfate, but the source is scalding — about 98°C and roughly 200 m deep — and it is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. It is meant for viewing, not bathing: you stroll the grounds and enjoy the steaming landscape rather than soak.

SafetyThe pond water is about 98°C and causes instant burns. Never lean over the railings or reach into the water, and keep a firm hold of children.
SafetySteam and sulfur fumes can be strong in places; those with respiratory conditions or who are pregnant should take it slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion.

MannersThe 'Hells' are for viewing, not soaking. Do not dip feet or toss coins into the ponds; use only the designated free ashiyu foot bath.

(For reference) Open 8:00–17:00, year-round; individual entry ¥500 adult / ¥250 child; combined 7-Hells ticket ¥2,400 adult / ¥1,200 child (as of Feb 2025, valid for 2 days including purchase date). Access: about a 20-min bus from Beppu Station West Exit to Kannawa, then a 5-min walk. The grounds are large, so arriving early is recommended.
