Udo (็ๅณถ, meaning "Cow Island") is the largest of Jeju's satellite islands, lying off the coast of Seongsan on Jeju's east side and named for its resemblance to a reclining cow. Reachable by a roughly 15-minute ferry from Seongsan or Jongdal Port, it is a classic day-trip destination packed with the scenery known as the "Eight Views of Udo," including a rare rhodolith white-sand beach, a black-sand beach, and a lighthouse-topped peak. Most visitors loop the island in about three to four hours.

RulesGeneral tourists are largely banned from bringing rental cars onto Udo. Exceptions require proof of an overnight stay on the island, or accompanying a mobility-impaired traveler (pregnant, infant, 65+, disabled). Since 2025 electric rental cars and 16-seat mini charter buses are allowed under eased rules, so check the latest regulations.
RulesThe rhodolith sand and nodules at Seobinbaeksa are a protected Natural Monument; removing sand, stones, or shells is prohibited by law. Do not take any as a souvenir.
SafetyThe Donganggyeonggul cave at Geommeolle floods at high tide and can only be entered at low tide. Check the tide table before you go; the rocks are very slippery and the inner cave ceiling is low, so watch your footing and head.
RulesA photo ID (passport for foreign visitors) is required to board the ferry. You must fill out a boarding declaration and show ID when buying tickets, so carry it with you.
SeasonIn summer peak season and on weekends, ferry queues can be long, so arrive early in the morning. Ferries may be canceled in bad weather or rough seas, which can strand you on the island, so confirm same-day service.
SafetyElectric scooters and e-bikes are popular rentals but cause frequent accidents among inexperienced riders. Slow down on coastal curves and windy stretches, and confirm any license requirements for rental two-wheelers.

Ferry about 15 min from Seongsan or Jongdal Port, roughly every 30 min (varies by season). Fares, schedules, and vehicle-entry rules change, so confirm the latest before booking or visiting. On the island, get around by circular shuttle bus (~8,000 KRW adult day pass), electric car, scooter, or bicycle. Bring a photo ID; a half-day (3-4 hours) is enough to loop the island.
