Uçhisar Castle (Uçhisar Kalesi) is the highest point in Cappadocia — a roughly 60-metre volcanic tuff outcrop that is not a built fortress but a single rock cone honeycombed with rooms, stairways, tunnels and dovecotes. In Byzantine times as many as 1,000 people are thought to have lived in and sheltered within it, and today its summit is one of Cappadocia's best panoramic viewpoints, taking in Göreme, Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik) and, on clear days, distant Mount Erciyes. As of 2026 it remains open to visitors and is especially prized for the dawn hot-air-balloon spectacle and for sunset. It makes an ideal first stop to grasp the whole Cappadocian landscape before exploring further.

RulesThe Museum Pass Cappadocia is NOT valid here. Uçhisar Castle is run by the municipality rather than the Ministry of Culture, so you must buy a separate ticket at the booth (cash or card).
SafetyReaching the top means climbing narrow, steep rock steps (about 275). Some sections have poor or no railings and can be slippery — wear grippy shoes, and take care with children or if you have knee trouble or a fear of heights.
SafetyThe exposed summit is very windy. Hold onto hats, sunglasses and phones, and never step past the safety barriers or edges for a photo.
SeasonIn winter (roughly Oct–Apr) snow and ice make the steps slippery and hours are shorter (typically 08:00–17:00). Summer midday brings harsh sun and crowds, so aim for early morning (balloons) or late afternoon (sunset).
MannersPrime summit spots fill fast at sunset — arrive 30–40 minutes early and yield to others on the narrow stairs. Remember the castle sits in a living village; be considerate about photographing homes and private property.
CautionAround the base, some individuals pose as parking attendants or impromptu guides to extract extra cash. Buy tickets only at the official booth and decline unclear 'paid parking' demands until verified.
RulesDrone flying is generally restricted and permit-based across Göreme National Park / Cappadocia — do not launch a drone from the castle without authorization.
Practical info
Uçhisar Castle stands in the centre of Uçhisar village, about 4 km from Göreme and 7 km from Nevşehir; the Nevşehir–Göreme dolmuş (minibus) passes through the village, and taxis or tours also reach it. The ticket booth is at the entrance; opening is roughly 08:00–19:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter (last entry about 30 minutes before closing), but fees and hours change frequently, so always check the latest information before you go.
