Overview
The Tower of London (officially His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress) is a nearly 1,000-year-old fortress, palace and prison begun around 1066 when William the Conqueror raised the White Tower, and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is best known as the home of the Crown Jewels, guarded by the Yeoman Warders ('Beefeaters') and the Tower's legendary ravens. One of London's most visited landmarks with over three million visitors a year, in 2026 the Middle Tower is undergoing conservation, so entry is temporarily via the Middle Drawbridge — allow at least half a day to explore.

RulesBook timed-entry tickets in advance on the official Historic Royal Palaces site — usually cheaper than at the gate and avoids queues. Prices and hours change, so check the latest.
MannersPhotography is not allowed inside the Jewel House (Crown Jewels). On Yeoman Warder tours, keep quiet and follow the guide's lead.
CautionWatch for pickpockets in the crowds around Tower Hill and the entrance; keep bags in front of you and secure your phone and wallet.
SafetyThe site is large with cobbles, uneven ground and steep spiral stairs in the White Tower — wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, and take care as surfaces can be slippery when wet.
SeasonIn peak summer (Jul–Aug) arrive right at opening to beat the crowds. London weather is changeable, so bring a layer and rain gear.
RulesUse an Oyster or contactless card on the Tube — no paper ticket needed. The Tower sits inside the Congestion Charge zone with no on-site parking, so avoid driving.
Practical info
Tower Hill station (Circle and District lines) is about a 5-minute step-free walk; you can also arrive via Tower Gateway DLR or a Tower Pier river boat. Opening is broadly Tue–Sat 09:00–17:30 and Sun–Mon 10:00–17:30 (last admission 16:30, last Yeoman Warder tour 15:15), but check prices, hours and any Middle Tower works on the official site before you go.
