This 43km loop circles the volcanic terrain of Mt Ngauruhoe (2,291m) and Mt Tongariro (1,978m), incorporating the famous day-hike section known as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing but completed over 3-4 days as the full Great Walk version. Passing through Mangatepopo, Oturere, and Waihohonu huts, it crosses a range of active volcanic features including red craters, the Emerald Lakes, and ash plains. Tongariro National Park holds dual UNESCO World Heritage status, recognized both for its natural features and for its cultural significance as a sacred site to the Ngāti Tūwharetoa people.
