A free observatory on the 45th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1 in Shinjuku, offering panoramic views from roughly 202 meters above ground over Tokyo's skyscraper district and, on clear days, as far as Mt. Fuji. It has separate South and North observatories, each with a cafe and souvenir shop, and at night the building's eastern facade hosts 'Tokyo Night & Light,' the world's largest permanent architectural projection-mapping show, viewable free of charge. In a city full of paid observation decks, its free access and evening views make it a standout value.

SeasonDistant views like Mt. Fuji are clearest on crisp winter mornings. Visibility drops on hazy or cloudy days, and the deck can close suddenly in bad weather.
CautionIf you head toward nearby Kabukicho after the night views, never follow street touts (kyakuhiki) into a bar. Overcharging scams are common, and street soliciting is actually banned under Shinjuku ward ordinances.
SafetyAs a free, popular spot it can get crowded and have waits (20-30 minutes reported), especially around the evening projection-mapping shows. Mind your belongings and move carefully in the crowds.
