Lake Titisee is the largest natural lake in the Black Forest, set in the southern uplands of Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany. It is a glacial lake gouged out during the last ice age by a glacier flowing down from the Feldberg — about 1.87 km long, up to 39 m deep and 845 m above sea level — ringed by fir forest and glacial moraines. A classic resort for boat cruises, pedaloes and swimming, it draws roughly two million visitors a year and is a heartland of the Black Forest's famous cuckoo clocks and cherry cake. In the 2026 summer high season (June–September) it gets busy, so it works well as a train day trip from Freiburg or paired with a half-day hike on the nearby Feldberg.
Round-the-lake cruise (Rundfahrt): two operators (Schweizer and Drubba) sail roughly every 30 minutes in good weather, and the 25–30 minute loop comes with the captain's commentary.
Pedaloes, rowing boats & swimming: hire pedaloes or rowing boats and try sailing or windsurfing in summer, or take a dip at the Strandbad lido.

Good to know
SeasonJune–September, and especially July–August, is peak season, when the promenade, car parks and boat/pedalo rentals all get crowded. Arrive early in the morning or come in the quieter spring/autumn shoulder season for more room.
SafetyAs a glacial lake the water stays cool even in midsummer (around 12–24°C) and the bottom drops off quickly near shore. Swim only at the designated Strandbad lido, and pack a light layer and rain shell as mountain weather changes fast.
RulesIf you stay overnight in the Black Forest, the KONUS guest card lets you ride regional buses and trains for free, but ICE/IC high-speed and mountain railways are excluded. The Strandbad lido charges separate admission (about €3.50 for adults); confirm current prices before you go.
MannersThe lakeside promenade is a commercial tourist strip packed with shops and cafés. Keep to the side so you don't block the walkway in peak crowds, and ask before photographing inside shops or people you don't know.
CautionCuckoo-clock prices vary a lot between shops, so compare, and check that a genuine piece carries the Black Forest Clock Association (VdS) certificate. Beware suspiciously cheap imitations and inflated tourist-restaurant prices, and watch your belongings in the crowds.
SeasonCruises and water sports typically run Easter to October and the Strandbad only May–September, all weather-dependent. In winter you can skate when the lake freezes solid, but boats stop — check operating status before visiting.
Practical info
From Freiburg main station the Höllentalbahn regional train reaches Titisee station in about 40 minutes (roughly every 30 minutes), and the lakefront is about a 10-minute walk from the station. Overnight guests in the Black Forest can ride this stretch free with the KONUS guest card.
