CautionBeware the tea-house / bar overcharging scam: well-dressed, English-speaking strangers approach and lead you to a 'great-view local bar' or 'traditional tea ceremony,' then present a bill of hundreds to thousands of yuan with no menu shown. This is common on the Bund and Nanjing Road, so politely decline invitations from strangers.
CautionNever enter a venue with no posted prices or menu. Confirm an English menu and card payment BEFORE ordering; a credit card gives you chargeback leverage that cash or Alipay does not.
SafetyExpect enormous crowds on weekends, holidays and New Year's Eve. A deadly stampede occurred near Chen Yi Square during the 2014 year-end countdown; when it is packed, avoid stairways and bottlenecks and do not push into a dense crowd.
