Sani Pass (2,874m), on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, is famous as a rough 4x4 track, but from Sani Top at the head of the pass, it's possible to day-hike on foot to Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482m), the highest peak in all of Southern Africa. The route starts at Sani Top Chalet β reputedly the highest pub in Africa β and follows the gently rolling grasslands of the Lesotho highlands to the summit. A distinctive feature of this trek is the border crossing itself: hikers get a passport stamp on the South African (KwaZulu-Natal) side before crossing into Lesotho.
