Overview
The Terracotta Army is a vast collection of life-size clay soldiers and horses built to guard China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in the afterlife, buried around 210 BCE. It was uncovered by chance in 1974 when local farmers dug a well near Lintong, outside Xi'an, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Thousands of figures are arrayed across three main pits beside the emperor's mausoleum, about 40 km northeast of central Xi'an.
Pit 1: the largest pit at 230 m long, with over 3,000 infantry and chariot figures of the main army lined up in battle formation across eleven corridors
Pit 2: a mixed unit of cavalry, archers and war chariots, home to the famous 'kneeling archer' and other finely detailed individual poses
Pit 3: small but believed to be the command headquarters, giving it special significance in the layout
Two bronze chariots (a war chariot and a canopied carriage): about half life-size, exquisitely restored and dubbed 'the Crown of Bronze'
Every figure has a distinct face, expression and armor, showing the astonishing level of individual portrait sculpture of the era

CautionPeople near the entrance or car park selling 'discount' or 'skip-the-line' tickets are almost always offering fakes or overpriced deals. Buy only through official reservation channels
CautionTaxi drivers or touts may steer you to the 'Eight Wonders of the World Museum' or an 'Underground Palace' filled with wax and fake figures. These are traps; do not follow them
CautionIllegal taxis lure tourists with 'free/cheap' rides, then force stops at jade or silver shops and refuse to leave until you buy something. Use only official transport
RulesEntry uses a real-name reservation system: bring your original passport (the same ID used to book) or you cannot enter or pass the ticket check
SeasonPeak (Mar 16-Nov 15) and off-season (Nov 16-Mar 15) have different opening and ticketing hours, and sales close about an hour before closing. Confirm the latest times
MannersFlash photography and tripods are restricted; do not lean over the railings or reach into the pits, to protect the artifacts
Practical info
Tickets sell out, so a real-name reservation via the official WeChat mini-program or website several days ahead is effectively required. Always confirm the latest prices, opening hours and ticketing cutoffs. From the city, Metro Line 9 plus a shuttle bus, or a ride-hailing app, best avoids scams; allow 2-3 hours and wear comfortable shoes.
