Tenryu-ji is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, in Kyoto's Saga-Arashiyama district. It was founded in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji to honor Emperor Go-Daigo, with the eminent Zen master Muso Soseki as founding abbot, and ranks first among Kyoto's "Five Mountains." Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 (Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto), its Sogenchi pond garden — designed by Muso Soseki and preserving its roughly 700-year-old form — was designated Japan's very first Special Historical Scenic Spot.

RulesThe garden, the halls (building interiors), and the Cloud Dragon painting are separate tickets with separate fees. The Cloud Dragon is generally shown only on weekends/holidays and during spring and autumn special openings — confirm the open days in advance.
