The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a roughly 37 km mountain-crossing route linking Tateyama Station in Toyama Prefecture with Ogizawa in Nagano Prefecture, traversed by transferring between a cable car, highland bus, tunnel trolleybus, ropeway and electric bus across the 3,000 m-class Northern Alps. Its centerpiece is Kurobe Dam, Japan's tallest arch dam at 186 m, famed for its emerald Lake Kurobe and dramatic sightseeing water discharge. The route is open only from mid-April to late November, and in spring the towering snow walls of Yuki-no-Otani at Murodo are a signature draw.

SeasonEven in spring, Murodo at 2,450 m can drop below freezing with strong winds. Bring a warm jacket, fleece, gloves, hat, waterproof shoes and easy-to-adjust layers, plus sunglasses and sunscreen β UV off the snow is intense.
SafetyThin air at altitude plus many steps and slopes can cause altitude symptoms or fatigue. Move slowly, don't overexert, and those with heart or respiratory conditions, children and older travelers should watch their condition.
