🇯🇵 Tassha Beach Senkaku Bay

達者海水浴場・尖閣湾 · 니가타 사도가시마

Location

Overview

On Sado Island's rugged west coast, Tassha Beach sits inside a deep, sheltered inlet within the scenic Senkaku Bay. Breakwaters and wave-dissipating blocks keep the water calm even when the open sea outside is rough, and the exceptional clarity means you can see the seabed clearly with nothing more than a snorkel mask — making it Niigata Prefecture's best-known shallow, beginner-friendly snorkel spot. Depths run about 1–3 m, visibility 5–10 m, and water temperature 22–25°C in July; this is the temperate Sea of Japan rather than a tropical reef, so expect local temperate fish rather than coral and tropical species, though the setting is unusually calm and clear for mainland Japan. A glass-bottom boat departs right next to the beach for a closer look at the bay's dramatic rock formations. For 2026, the beach opens 9 July with lifeguards on duty 11 July–29 August — plan your visit within that window.

Practical info

From Ryotsu Port it's about a 60-minute drive (roughly 10 minutes from Aikawa town), and the "Senkakuwan Tassha" bus stop is a 1-minute walk from the beach. Reach Sado itself from Niigata Port by jetfoil (about 67 minutes) or car ferry (about 2.5 hours). Book snorkel-gear rental, guided tours, and glass-bottom-boat rides ahead of time, and check the official sites for current pricing, schedules, and the exact swimming-season dates before you go.
