Takachiho Gorge is a narrow chasm in northern Miyazaki Prefecture, carved by the Gokase River through columnar basalt cliffs formed by ancient eruptions of nearby Mount Aso. Sheer 80-100m walls frame the roughly 17m Manai Falls (Minainotaki), and the site is designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. It is also celebrated as a setting of the sun-goddess Amaterasu mythology.

RulesRental boats are essentially reservation-only online. Book on the official site from two weeks before (9:00) up to two days before boarding; phone reservations are not accepted. A small number of same-day tickets sell in the morning at the reception, so advance booking is strongly advised.
SeasonBoats are suspended when the river is high (after heavy rain or dam releases) and in bad weather, even on sunny days. They also close for scheduled safety checks in January, April, July and October, so confirm operations on the official site just before your visit.
SafetyThe gorge is narrow, so on busy days boats often bump into each other. Life jackets are mandatory (including toddlers); standing, swimming and splashing are prohibited, and keep hands and limbs inside the boat. Only junior-high age and above may row.
RulesParking near the gorge entrance uses paid lots (Oshioi, Araragi and others); fees are being changed/raised, so check the latest rates. Lots fill early on weekends and peak seasons, so arrive early in the morning.
MannersDrinking alcohol and smoking on the boats are prohibited, and getting too close to the waterfall can pull you into strong currents, so keep a safe distance.

Hours 8:30-17:00 (last boat reception 16:30). Boat fee is about ¥4,100 (Tue-Thu) or ¥5,100 (Fri-Mon and peak) per boat for 30 minutes, up to 3 people (4 if including a preschooler). Always verify fees, hours and operations with the latest official info. By public transport, alight at Takachiho Bus Center, about 2km from the gorge (30-40 min walk or ~5 min taxi).
