🇹🇼 Sun Moon Lake

日月潭 · 난터우(Nantou)

Location

Overview

Sun Moon Lake, in the mountains of Nantou County in central Taiwan (elevation ~748 m), is the island's largest alpine lake, named for its shape: a round "sun" in the north and a crescent "moon" in the south. It is the homeland of the indigenous Thao people and surrounds the sacred islet of Lalu, and is best explored in a day by combining a lake cruise, the ropeway, and its lakeside bike path. Landmark temples, viewpoints, and the Thao village of Ita Thao make it one of Taiwan's signature destinations.

Practical info

Easiest access is the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle "Sun Moon Lake Line" bus from Taichung; the round-lake bus, cruise boats, and ropeway accept EasyCard, cash, and mobile payment. Combo tickets bundling the cruise, ropeway, and bike are usually better value than buying separately. Confirm fares and hours before your visit.
