🇭🇺 St. Stephen's Basilica

Szent István-bazilika · 부다페스트

Location

Overview

St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent István-bazilika) is Budapest's largest church, built over half a century from 1851 to 1905 in honour of Stephen I, Hungary's first king and a canonised saint. Neoclassical in style and laid out as a Greek cross, its 96-metre dome ties with the Hungarian Parliament as the tallest structure in the city—a height that deliberately echoes 896, the year the Magyars settled the Carpathian Basin. Inside, the naturally mummified right hand of King Stephen (the Holy Right Hand, or Szent Jobb) is preserved as a relic, making the basilica a place of pilgrimage as much as a monument. As of 2026 it is fully open and remains a working church with regular Mass, while also drawing visitors to its 65-metre panorama terrace and celebrated organ concerts—so come ready to balance sightseeing with the etiquette of a place of worship.

Walk from metro M1 (yellow line) Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út or M3 (blue line) Arany János utca; it is also about a 5-minute walk from the major Deák Ferenc tér transport hub. The nave generally opens from about 9:00 Monday–Saturday and from after morning Mass on Sunday (typically midday/afternoon), while the panorama terrace and treasury open daily—but exact opening times, ticket prices and combo options change frequently, so verify the latest on the official website before visiting.
