RulesThe dress code is strictly enforced. All visitors — regardless of gender, age, or religion — must cover shoulders and knees; sleeveless tops, short shorts, miniskirts, and hats can result in denied entry.
CautionIgnore petition-clipboard teams asking for signatures and people offering 'free' bracelets or roses around St. Peter's Square — these are pickpocket distraction tactics.
CautionEntry is free, yet unofficial touts outside the square sell 'skip-the-line tickets' at several times face value. Buy dome or tour tickets only from the official site (basilicasanpietro.va).
SafetyBus lines 64 and 46 between the Vatican and Termini and Metro Line A are notorious for pickpockets — nicknamed the 'Pickpocket Express.' Keep valuables in a front pocket or zipped crossbody bag.
RulesOn Wednesday mornings the basilica is restricted for the Papal General Audience, usually reopening around 12:30 pm. Large backpacks and luggage aren't allowed and must be left at the free cloakroom.
SeasonIn summer peak season and especially during a Jubilee year, security queues can stretch 1–4 hours. Visit on a weekday 7–9 am (Tuesday and Thursday are quietest) and avoid 10 am–2 pm.
Practical info
Free entry (security screening required). The basilica is generally open roughly 07:00–19:00 (Apr–Sep) and 07:00–18:30 (Oct–Mar). Dome climb costs about €10 stairs / €15 lift+stairs at the on-site kiosk (€17 / €22 online) — confirm current prices and hours on the official site before your visit. The dome climb is not advised for those with heart or respiratory conditions, vertigo, claustrophobia, or for pregnant women.
