Sorakuen (相楽園) is a chisen-kaiyu (pond-strolling) Japanese garden in the heart of Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Originally laid out as the estate garden of Kobe businessman Yasujiro Kodera, it was completed in the early Taisho era and, after passing to the City of Kobe, opened to the public in 1941. Across its roughly 20,000 m2 grounds, ponds, waterfall stonework, and stepping-stone paths are set among historic buildings, including the Important Cultural Properties Funayakata (an ornate roofed boat structure), the Western-style former Hassam House, and the former Kodera Stable — making it the only full-scale traditional Japanese garden in central Kobe.

SeasonThe garden is at its most beautiful during the late-April-to-early-May azalea season; in this 'Tsutsuji Yuzan' period it opens even on Thursdays, and the normally closed interior of the former Hassam House is sometimes opened to the public. Confirm bloom timing and event dates before visiting.
RulesThe regular closing day is Thursday (open if it is a public holiday, closed the following day) plus the year-end/New Year period (Dec 29–Jan 3). However, it stays open daily during the azalea season and the Chrysanthemum Exhibition, so check current day-by-day hours before you go.
RulesOpening hours are 9:00 to 17:00, but last admission is 16:30 — an early cutoff. Arriving near closing may not leave enough time to stroll the whole garden.
MannersThis is a quiet strolling garden, so avoid loud voices, unauthorized tripod use, and stepping into flower beds. Inside cultural-property buildings such as the former Hassam House, follow posted rules on photography and entry.
SafetyStepping-stone paths, stone bridges, and mossy slopes can be slippery, especially after rain. Wear low, non-slip shoes, and watch your footing and hold children's hands near the pond edges.
Practical info
About a 5-minute walk from Kencho-mae Station on the Kobe Municipal Subway Seishin-Yamate Line, or about 10 minutes from Motomachi Station (Hanshin/JR). Admission is around 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for elementary/junior-high students (confirm current rates). Allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour; timing a visit to the spring azaleas or autumn chrysanthemums offers the richest scenery.
