Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, still widely known by its former name Jungang (Central) Market, is the signature traditional market in the seaside city of Sokcho, Gangwon State. It brings together fresh East Sea seafood and Sokcho's beloved street foods, making it a must-visit stop on any Sokcho trip. The market combines a multi-floor building (one basement, two upper floors) with specialized alleys such as the sundae (sausage) alley and salted-seafood alley.
Sokcho-style dakgangjeong - crispy fried chicken glazed in sweet-and-spicy sauce and topped with crushed peanuts, one of Korea's most famous versions
Squid sundae and abai sundae alleys - hearty local specialties rooted in the cooking of displaced northern families
Street snacks like sulbbang (steamed makgeolli-rice-wine bread with beans) and gamja-jeon (Gangwon potato pancake)
Fresh seafood counters selling live-fish sashimi, snow crab and king crab prepared on the spot
Easy walk to the Gaetbae hand-pulled ferry (to Abai Village) and Cheongchoho Lake Park nearby
Good to know
CautionSnow crab and king crab are often sold at fluctuating market price with no fixed tag. Weight-padding tricks (using baskets, ice or water to inflate weight) have been reported at Korean fish markets, so watch the scale and the cleaning process yourself.
CautionHaggling is common at this tourist market. Agree on the total price and weight before buying, and clarify any extra charges (side dishes, table service) or leftover cuts before live fish is sliced into sashimi.
MannersThe narrow alleys, especially the sundae alley, get very crowded at lunch (roughly 11:00-14:00) and on weekends and holidays. Don't cut queues at tasting or purchase lines and keep moving so you don't block the passage.
SeasonIn winter (roughly from November) sandfish (dorumuk), sand lance (yangmiri) and snow crab are in season and plentiful, but king/snow crab prices swing daily. Confirm what's in season and the day's price on site rather than assuming.
SafetyFloors around the seafood counters can be wet and slippery, and freshness matters for raw seafood. In summer, minimize how long fish sits at room temperature and mind proper storage.
Practical info
Hours are roughly from around 8:00 into the night, but vary by stall. It's about a 5-minute walk from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal and roughly 10-15 minutes from the Express Bus Terminal. A large public parking lot is nearby, and spending above a set amount can earn free-parking coupons. Verify fees, hours and parking policy before you go.
