Overview

Sixth Street is Austin, Texas's best-known nightlife and live-music strip, running east–west through downtown; it was originally called Pecan Street. Its nine-block core of 19th-century Victorian commercial buildings was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and in keeping with Austin's self-styled title as the 'Live Music Capital of the World,' bands spill out of open bar doors nightly, with the street serving as a hub for the SXSW and Austin City Limits (ACL) festivals. As of 2026 the City of Austin is advancing a major redesign to widen sidewalks and cut vehicle lanes, and on weekend nights it runs a mix of restored car traffic and protected pedestrian zones for safety. Visit by day for the historic architecture and cafés, and by night for a nightlife scene that changes character block by block.

Practical info

Sixth Street runs through downtown Austin between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35, an easy walk from CapMetro bus and rail stops at the downtown station. The street itself is free and always open, but individual bars' and venues' hours, cover charges, and weekend traffic closures change frequently — confirm the latest details before you go.
