Pulau Sipadan is Malaysia's only true oceanic island, off Semporna in Sabah, formed by corals growing atop an extinct volcanic cone that plunges roughly 600 m straight into the Celebes Sea just steps from shore. Jacques Cousteau called it 'an untouched piece of art' in 1988, and it is world-famous for its barracuda tornado and abundant sea turtles. No one may stay overnight on the island, so diving is done only as day trips from nearby Mabul or Kapalai islands, or from Semporna town.

RulesSipadan entry is by Sabah Parks permit; only registered dive operators receive the limited daily quota (on the order of ~170+ permits). You cannot buy one directly — permits are typically allocated with a 3-night-plus package at a nearby resort, and peak season (Mar–Sep) books out 6–12 months ahead. Confirm current rules when booking.
RulesSince October 2022 divers must hold Advanced Open Water certification or above (snorkeling handled separately). A cap on dives per day applies, so verify certification and dive-count rules with your operator before booking.
SafetyThis is the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE); a 2000 kidnapping occurred at Sipadan (over 20 years ago) and several governments keep 'increased caution' advisories for the offshore islands. A dusk-to-dawn sea curfew bans night boat movement — only licensed, ESSCOM-cleared operators may run the crossing.
SeasonSipadan is customarily closed around November for reef recovery, and Mar–Sep sees fierce permit competition. Check opening dates, weather and permit availability for your travel window (latest info required).
MannersNever touch or chase corals or turtles; maintain neutral buoyancy so you don't kick the wall or reef. Use reef-safe sunscreen as a courtesy to this fragile ecosystem.
CautionOn the Tawau–Semporna road transfer, beware meterless taxis/vans overcharging, and avoid unlicensed 'Sipadan day-dive' touts. Confirm the operator is Sabah Parks–registered so your permit and safety are genuinely covered.
Practical info
Access: Kota Kinabalu/Kuala Lumpur → Tawau Airport → ~1 hr by road to Semporna → boat to a base such as Mabul or Kapalai. No accommodation on the island; Semporna is cheapest, but a Mabul/Kapalai resort is most convenient. Confirm entry fees, prices and open days at time of booking.
