🇵🇹 Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves)

Castelo de Silves · 실베스 (Silves)

Location

Overview

Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves) is a red-sandstone Moorish fortress crowning a hilltop in Portugal's Algarve, and is regarded as the largest and best-preserved Islamic castle in the region. Under Moorish rule from the 8th to 13th centuries, Silves was the capital and a key trading and cultural centre of the Al-Gharb (Algarve); it was first taken by King Sancho I in 1189 and definitively conquered by Christian forces in 1242. Visitors can walk the ramparts, explore the excavated Moorish settlement and a huge underground cistern, and take in panoramic views over the historic town and surrounding hills.
