A ruin where a 5th-century royal palace was built atop a giant rock rising 200m over the jungle — Sri Lanka's flagship UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb the stairs between the lion's paws to reach the summit palace, frescoes and mirror wall.

SafetyThe 1,200+ steps to the top are steep with some flimsy railings — mind heights and heat.
SeasonThe dry season (Jan–Apr) is best; early morning is cool, quiet and has fewer hornets.
