Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Shirakawa-go lies deep in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, and Ogimachi is its largest hamlet with well over a hundred gassho-zukuri farmhouses. 'Gassho-zukuri' means 'built like hands in prayer', describing the steep thatched roofs built without nails to shed the region's heavy snow, with airy attics once used to raise silkworms. Above all, this is a living village where residents still go about their daily lives.

RulesNighttime sightseeing is not allowed. Because residents live here, the village is closed to tourism after dark except for overnight guests.
MannersMost gassho houses are private homes. Do not enter private land, gardens, fields, or open doorways, and do not photograph residents without permission.
SafetyThe thatched roofs are highly flammable. Smoking, fireworks and open flames are strictly prohibited, and cigarette litter is banned.
RulesDrones are banned. Stepping into rice fields or farmland for photos is also prohibited.
MannersThere are no public trash cans in the village — please take all your rubbish with you.
SeasonThe winter Light-Up (41st event 2027: Jan 11, 17, 24, 31) is fully reservation-based; visitors without a reservation cannot attend on the day. Confirm the booking method in advance.
Practical info
Hours: Wada House 9:00-17:00 (400 yen); Gassho-zukuri Minkaen 8:40-17:00 (Mar-Nov) / 9:00-16:00 (Dec-Feb), 800 yen (closed Thursdays Dec-Mar). The viewpoint is a ~30-min walk or a ~10-min shuttle (about 300 yen, cash). Getting there: Nohi Bus from Takayama takes ~50 min, ~2,600 yen one-way (some services reserved-seat); buses also run from Kanazawa and Nagoya. Tour-bus parking is reservation-based (bus parking booking opens Dec 1, 2026). Always check fares, hours and reservation rules on the official site before visiting.
