Overview

Shaolin Temple (Shaolin Monastery) sits at the foot of Mount Song in Dengfeng, Henan Province, China, and is celebrated worldwide as the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the cradle of Shaolin kung fu. Founded around 495 CE in the Northern Wei era, it carries more than 1,500 years of history and was inscribed as part of the 'Historic Monuments of Dengfeng' UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Beyond the temple halls, the daily kung fu demonstrations in the Martial Arts Hall are a signature attraction.

Practical info

Admission, opening hours, and show times change, so verify the latest before you go. For reference, the scenic-area ticket recently ran about ¥80 per person (including the electric shuttle bus), with the site generally open from morning (around 7:30–8:00) until roughly 5:30 pm. A shuttle from downtown Dengfeng takes about 30–40 minutes, and it's doable as a day trip from Zhengzhou or Luoyang.
