Seoraksan National Park spans the Gangwon cities of Sokcho, Yangyang, Inje and Goseong, and was designated a national park in 1970; its highest point is Daecheongbong Peak at 1,708 m. Dramatic granite peaks, valleys, waterfalls and temples draw large crowds, especially during the autumn foliage season. Routes range from easy valley walks to grueling ridge traverses such as Dinosaur Ridge.
Ulsanbawi Rock - a formation of six granite peaks and the park's signature hike, roughly a 3.5-4 hour round trip to the steel-stair summit
Biryong and Yukdam Falls plus the Towangseong Falls observation deck - a relatively easy streamside trail; Towangseong is one of Korea's tallest multi-tier waterfalls
Seoraksan Cable Car - about a 10-minute ride up to Gwongeumseong Fortress at around 700 m, with sweeping views over Sokcho and the coast
Sinheungsa Temple - a 7th-century temple with a large bronze Buddha statue near its entrance, easily seen en route to and from Ulsanbawi
Dinosaur (Gongnyong) Ridge and Daecheongbong Peak - among the hardest traverses in the park, a 10-13 hour outing prized by experienced hikers

RulesDuring spring and autumn forest-fire prevention periods, some trails (including major ridges up to Daecheongbong) are closed. Always check the latest closure status on the Korea National Park Service site (knps.or.kr) before visiting.
RulesHiking off designated trails is prohibited and can incur a fine. Stick to the marked routes.
SafetyFalls and getting stranded are recurring accidents here. Avoid pushing onto rugged sections beyond your ability, and plan to descend before dark.
SeasonWinter brings ice, strong wind and hypothermia risk. Carry crampons and cold-weather gear, and adjust plans if the weather turns.
SeasonAt peak foliage (mid- to late October) expect severe congestion and traffic jams; parking lots can fill before 8 a.m. Arrive very early or visit on a weekday.
RulesMountain shelters such as Jungcheong below Daecheongbong have limited capacity and fill quickly in peak season. Confirm reservation requirements before an overnight traverse.
Practical info
There is no park entrance fee (temple admission fees were waived in May 2024). The cable car sells round-trip tickets only and cannot be booked online, so buy on site (confirm current price and operating hours). The park is reachable by bus or taxi from central Sokcho; fares and schedules vary by season and weather.
