🇨🇭 Schilthorn (Piz Gloria)

Schilthorn (Piz Gloria) · 뮈렌

Location

Overview

The Schilthorn is a 2,970 m (9,744 ft) peak above Mürren in the Bernese Alps, best known for Piz Gloria, the revolving panorama restaurant at its summit. It earned worldwide fame as a filming location for the 1969 James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service,' and its highlight is the 360-degree panorama facing the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The large-scale cableway modernization begun in 2023 (Schilthornbahn 20XX) was completed in spring 2026 when the final new Funifor cable car opened on the Stechelberg–Mürren–Birg–Schilthorn line, so as of 2026 all summit facilities and the full route are fully operational. It makes an ideal half-day mountain excursion combining alpine scenery with Bond lore.

Practical info

From the Stechelberg valley station you ride the world's steepest cable car up to Mürren, then continue via Birg to the Schilthorn summit (about 30 minutes); Mürren is also reachable from Lauterbrunnen by mountain train and funicular. It operates year-round, generally every 20 minutes between roughly 09:00 and 17:00, but confirm exact hours, fares, and any maintenance closures on the official site.
