🇫🇷 Scandola Nature Reserve

Réserve naturelle de Scandola · 코르시카

Location

Overview

Scandola Nature Reserve is a protected coastline of red volcanic (rhyolite) rock in the Gulf of Porto, western Corsica. Created in 1975, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 together with the Gulf of Girolata and the Calanche of Piana. It has no road and no coastal path through its core, so it can only be reached by boat, and it is famed for its sea-cliffs, hidden caves, 'organ-pipe' rock columns, nesting ospreys and crystal-clear water. Facing more than 200,000 visitors a year, it lost its European Diploma of Protected Areas in 2020, and 2026 is a 'transition year' introducing operator licences, QR-based entry monitoring and voluntary quotas ahead of stricter enforcement and an enlarged reserve from 2027. Sightseeing is done from the boat; with daily peaks of 3,000–3,500 people in July–August, late spring and autumn are far more pleasant.

Practical info

With no road access, the reserve is visited only by boat tour departing from Porto (the closest), Calvi, Ajaccio, Cargèse or Sagone, usually combined with Girolata over about 3–4 hours. Prices, timetables and whether boats sail all depend on the weather and the new 2026 rules, so confirm the latest details with a licensed operator before booking.
