The Scaligero Castle of Sirmione (Rocca Scaligera) is a 14th-century water-surrounded fortress at the tip of a narrow peninsula on Lake Garda, built by the Della Scala (Scaligeri) family of Verona. Counted among Italy's best-preserved castles, it is a rare surviving example of a fortified harbour, with an inner dock (darsena) enclosed by its walls. Reached by crossing a drawbridge, it forms the iconic gateway into Sirmione's old town.

RulesSirmione's entire old town is a ZTL (limited traffic zone). Day visitors cannot drive past the castle drawbridge; 24-hour cameras issue immediate fines. Park at paid lots in front of the castle (e.g., Monte Baldo or Grifo) and walk in.
SeasonIn July–August and the spring peak, parking lots fill by mid-morning. Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m., and book tickets online in advance to cut down on queues.
SafetyThere are many narrow, steep steps up to the keep, and floors and walkways can be uneven. There is no lift, so it is not wheelchair-friendly and strollers may need to be left at the entrance. Wear grippy shoes and take care with children or older visitors.
RulesEntry is free on the first Sunday of each month but far more crowded than usual. Opening hours vary by day, low season, and holidays, with frequent Monday closures — always check the official Lombardy regional museums (Ministry of Culture) site for the latest hours and prices before going.
MannersThe darsena rampart walkway sits right over the water; do not lean over or climb the parapets. In the narrow passages, avoid blocking the path for photos and give way to visitors behind you.
