🇪🇬 Sataya Reef (Dolphin House)

شعاب ساتايا (Shaab Sataya) · 이집트 마르사알람 (하마타 앞바다)

Location

Overview

Sataya Reef, better known as the Dolphin House, is a large half-moon coral reef in the southern Egyptian Red Sea, about 10 km off the coast near Hamata. Resident pods of spinner dolphins hunt in the deep offshore water at night and move into its shallow, sheltered lagoon during the day to rest, which is what makes it one of the Red Sea's iconic spots to meet wild dolphins and vivid coral from the surface with just a snorkel — no deep diving required. The lagoon averages 5–10 m deep (up to about 20 m at the edges) with visibility of 20–30 m on clear days, and green sea turtles and blue-spotted ribbontail rays are regular sightings. As of 2026 the reef is still reachable only by boat — a day trip or a 2–5 night liveaboard from Hamata — and dolphin-protection rules, including limits on the number of boats, apply.

Practical info

There is no shore access, so you reach Sataya only by boat: a day trip (about 2–2.5 hours each way) or a 2–5 night liveaboard from Hamata port, roughly 100 km south of Marsa Alam. Packages typically include gear, a guide and lunch, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Fares, departure times and group limits change often, so book through a licensed, eco-certified operator and confirm the latest details before you go.
